The Liceo Scientifico Artistico Statale "Galileo Galilei", under the Presidency of the Head Teacher, prof.ssa Angela Pastoressa, and Head of Administration, dott.ssa Anna Santa Dagostino, is a High School located in Bitonto, Province of Bari, in Apulia region, South-Eastern Italy. It's a High School that specializes in Humanistic and Scientific studies, with more than 700 students and about 60 teachers. The main subjects taught are Mathematics and Physics, Italian, Geography, Latin, English, Science, Arts, History and Philosophy. The school is also provided with a technologically advanced Art-oriented course of "Liceo Artistico - Indirizzo Audiovisivo-Multimediale".
The
main distinctive educational traits and objectives of our school are:
- A specially
blended curriculum, in perfect and proper harmony with Scientific Culture and Humanistic
Tradition.
-
Knowledge and competence in Mathematics, Physics, Science.
- Development of
competences and skills to promote scientific and technological research and interactive relationship in different fields
of knowledge.
- Italian and
English Language competences in the four skills
(Listening-Speaking-Reading- Writing),
also thanks to the constant use of Language Laboratories and Interactive
Whiteboard-in classes.
In addition, over
the years, we have been constantly promoting many projects and training courses
on the basis of a European Development Plan, specifically designed for both students
and teachers, aimed at developing and enhancing the communicative
competence in the English language. English
Language Qualifications can eventually be obtained and the programme helps
fight school dispersion and dropping out.
In fact, in a
global communicative society, allowing students to gain the necessary Language
and Cultural skills in order to play an adequate role within the European and
International Community, has become a rather urgent priority. Individuals
can therefore realize a more effective social and cultural inclusion at any
level.
As the Ministry
of Education and Research (MIUR – D.M. 20/12/2012 – D.D. 16/1/2013) has established, the challenge to be accomplished
by Italian High Schools is now the Content
and Language Integrated Learning (C.L.I.L.) and Teaching Methodology, a
National Operational Plan, in accordance with
the Council of Europe Language Education Policies, aimed at promoting
Plurilingualism, Linguistic Diversity, Mutual Understanding, Democratic
Citizenship, Social Cohesion.
According to
these guidelines, some specific Curriculum Subjects (among which
Mathematics/Physics, History/Philosophy, Science) are being taught in English. In
addition, our school offers the Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum, a high-quality
International Educational Programme designed to engage students and give them
solid foundations in order to achieve high levels of academic and
personal attainment. The course consists
in an English/Subject language
Curriculum built around the 5 core IGCSE Subjects (English, Mathematics,
Physics, Geography, Chemistry) and offers an international cross-curricular perspective in learning.
